I. Basic situation of the world skill competition

1. Origin and overview

The World Skills Organization is a neutral, non-profit, worldwide organization headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The history of the World Skills Competition dates back to 1946 and was initiated by Spain. After the Second World War, countries around the world urgently needed a skilled workforce. To this end, Spain began training in youth skills. In order to evaluate the results of the training, the first World Skills Competition was held in Madrid, Spain in 1950. Since 1955, countries such as Europe, Asia, America, Oceania and Africa have also participated in the World Skills Competition, making it an international skill competition. The first 20 competitions, except the 2nd to the 4th, are held every two years, until the 20th session held in 1971 is held once a year. Since the 20th World Skills Competition held in 1971, it has been basically held every two years (except for the 24th to the 26th, which is held once a year, and after the 29th, one year later). And it was changed to a few years. From the 7th, the World Skills Competition will be sponsored by various member countries (regions). The 41st World Skills Competition will be held in London, England in 2011. In addition to the World Skills Competition, there are regional competitions on all continents, usually held in even years.

To participate in the World Skills Competition, you must become a member country (region) of the World Skills Organization. At present, the World Skills Organization has a total of 57 member countries (regions) spread over five continents, mainly developed countries and major economies or regions. Among them, the largest number is Europe and Asia, with 23 and 18 member countries (regions) respectively.

The World Skills Competition has three purposes: one is to promote skills exchange among young people in various countries and to improve domestic skills; the second is to promote mutual understanding among countries; the third is to promote the exchange of information on vocational skills training systems and methods. For participating countries, by participating in the World Skills Competition, on the one hand, they can learn advanced foreign technology concepts. On the other hand, they can prepare domestic competitions according to the standards of the World Contest, which is conducive to training and selecting young core skills.
