German researchers use sun-water carbon dioxide to synthesize liquid hydrocarbons

The German Aerospace Center announced on the 29th that an international research group involving the agency used sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to synthesize liquid hydrocarbons, which can be used to make kerosene.

First, researchers decomposed metal oxides into metal ions and oxygen ions in a solar reactor. The high temperature of 2,000 degrees Celsius required for this process can be obtained with a concentrating solar receiver. Then, carbon dioxide and water vapor are allowed to pass through the solar reactor, and both react with metal ions and oxygen ions that have been decomposed before and generate a synthesis gas that is a mixture of highly pure hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Production of kerosene from this syngas can be accomplished by means of the prior art, the so-called "Fischer-Tropsch synthesis". The method uses the above synthesis gas as a raw material to synthesize liquid hydrocarbons under iron-based catalysts and under specific conditions, in which liquid hydrocarbons containing more light hydrocarbons can be used to produce kerosene.

The German Aerospace Center stated that the research team has successfully manufactured kerosene using this new process. Since then, the team will further optimize solar reactors and other equipment, and explore the possibility of using this process for the industrial production of aviation kerosene.

This research work is part of the “solar-aircraft” project launched in January 2011, which was funded by the EU for four years. In addition to the German Aerospace Center, the project partners include the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, the Bauhaus Aviation Association and Shell. (Reporter Guo Yang)
