On May 19, 2009, Kennametal announced on their website that it had signed a definitive agreement to sell its high-speed steel drill bits, related product lines and assets to the Dalian Far East Group (top-eastern).
Kennametal announced that the divestiture is in line with Kenner's strategy to form its business portfolio and rationalize its manufacturing footprint, this divestiture will involve its approximately 400 employees worldwide.
It is understood that they will focus more on providing users with competitive solutions.
From a traditional point of view, in the field of metal processing, high-speed steel drill bits have certain merits in the fields of small diameter, large diameter and large aspect ratio. At present, the whole solid carbide drill bit has reached 0.1mm in small diameter, and the large-diameter-to-solid carbide drill bit for machining the crankshaft oil hole has also been widely used, and in the large diameter, it is combined with the center carbide drill bit. The combined structure of the peripheral indexable inserts, or the internal chip removal of the welded or indexable inserts, the large drill bit for the external chip removal, and the application of the high speed steel drill bit in metal processing have been limited. Maintaining the production of high-speed steel drill bits in this form should not be a good choice for Kennametal. Such a choice is like the fact that many communication equipment manufacturers abandoned production of pagers. The product line of high-speed steel wire cone is said to be not included in this stripping. The analysis of cutting technology is considered to be precisely because high-speed steel wire cone still plays an important role in internal thread processing.
The cutting technology website analyzes Kennametal's hands of high-speed steel drill bits, and will pay more attention to cemented carbide, ceramics, cubic boron nitride, diamonds and other advanced technologies than high-speed steel. If so, this would be advantageous for Kennametal metals or for tool users.
As early as about 11 months ago, Kennametal sold its WORKO subsidiary, a German high-speed steel product, to Dalian Far East on June 20, 2008. It is expected that Dalian Far East will use China's tungsten resources and resources of cheap labor, and then take advantage of Kennameta's divested part of the brand and marketing network to go further in high-speed steel tools.
