According to a report on the UK’s “Times†website, scientists are using extracts from plant leaves and grains to develop a technology to intervene in the human digestion process and reduce human hunger. It is expected that foods such as snacks, cakes, chocolate and biscuits that help people lose weight through appetite suppression will be available within two years.
The pioneering development of this technology is the Norwich Food Institute in the United Kingdom. Its research funding comes from the government’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
According to reports, the secret to satisfying appetite lies in a series of natural fat molecules known as galactolipids, which can be found in cereals such as oats and most edible green leaves. It slows down the breakdown of fat in the digestive tract and stimulates it. A hormone called cholecystokinin secretes hormones that send out "already full" messages to the brain.
Peter Wade, a biophysicist at the Norwich Institute for Food Research, said he believes that galactolipids can be added to any food or drink to suppress hunger. He also said that the high content of galactolipids in oats may explain why people feel that oat-based foods are easy to fill their stomachs.
