The industry's first three-in-one TV tuner chip MT2131 came out

Microtune recently produced the MT2131, the industry's first three-in-one TV tuner chip. According to Microtune, the single chip reliably receives traditional wireless analog TV, wireless digital TV and cable TV signals.

"The MT2131 tuner is the only module in the industry that can support both analog and digital TV signals for both wired and terrestrial broadcasts, " said James Fontaine, president and CEO of Microtune . "By removing more than 100 components from the bill of materials, the MT2131 will be an RF chip." The cost is reduced by 60%."

MT2131 is expected to be in volume production this fall and will be manufactured by IBM Microelectronics using IBM's silicon germanium (SiGe) process. The estimated unit price for bulk ordering is around $3.

Microtune's focus on this initiative is the final time limit of February 17, 2009. At that time, according to the decree (now waiting for the US President to sign), the national analog TV broadcast signal will stop sending. In addition to TV, consumer products such as DVD recorders and PVRs will also be affected by this pending law, which will incorporate wireless digital tuners. Although a $990 million funding project will be launched with the enactment of the Act to subsidize users to purchase conversion set-top boxes , these set-top boxes must be very inexpensive.

The transition from the United States to digital television is complex, and it is expected that multiple terrestrial and cable broadcast standards will coexist in a few years. This has forced manufacturers to design products that can simultaneously receive wireless digital signals, wireless analog signals, and wired signals.

In-Stat predicts that shipments of consumer electronics systems equipped with digital TV tuners (compliant with the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) regulations will leap from 12 million in 2005 to 57 million in 2009. This statistic includes everything from integrated digital TVs to DVD recorders, set-top boxes and digital PC /TV tuners.

Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst at In-Stat, Freescale, Broadcom, Conexant as Microtune and TI chip tuner competitors in the field. And LG (Zenith brand name) and ATI Technologies (including already acquired NxtWave company) is a strong vendor in the field of digital television ATSC demodulator, he said.

While conventional single-sealed tuners can be "informed" whether to receive wireless signals or analog wired signals, such tuners typically require a bridge component to allow the tuner output to be connected to different demodulators, Kaufhold describes. Microtune and its competitor's bridging components allow a tuner to serve multiple demodulators.

Implementing 3-in-1 tuning in a single chip is no easy task, Fontaine emphasizes, because the spectrum settings for wired and wireless TVs are simply different. Since wireless signal broadcasting occupies a very wide spectrum and there is a large gap between channels, the tuner needs to increase the sensitivity to receive weak signals from a distant location; in addition, it must deal with interference from adjacent channels. In contrast to wireless broadcasting, cable television channels are very compactly arranged in a narrow spectrum, but since these channels all transmit signals at the same power level, there is virtually no interference between them.
