The United States has developed a biosensor that can detect explosives.

Researchers at Temple University in the United States have recently used genetic engineering techniques to develop a biosensor that emits green fluorescence once explosives are found.
Researchers at Temple University School of Medicine reported in the June issue of Nature and Chemical Biology that they used genetic engineering techniques to first introduce mammalian olfactory signaling systems into a yeast strain and then use this olfactory sense. The signaling system is linked to the expression of green fluorescent protein.
In the specific operation, the researchers selected mice as experimental subjects and cloned the individual olfactory receptors of the mice into yeast cells. When the olfactory receptor "sniffs" into the TNT explosive, the yeast emits green fluorescence as a biosensor.
The team said that in the future, this biosensor can also be used to detect deadly substances such as mines and sarin gas. They believe that mammalian olfactory systems have great potential, can identify many chemicals, and are highly sensitive and can be used to detect toxic chemicals.
The researchers will next optimize the biosensor, such as reducing response time.
