U.S. Department of Energy NREL Develops PV Module Coating Technology

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States is currently developing special coatings for components to solve the problems of humidity control, adhesion, and dust adhesion of photovoltaic modules worldwide. According to the cooperation agreement between the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and the Masdar Renewable Energy Project in Abu Dhabi, the use of NREL coated PV modules will be tested in Masdar City.

The technicians decided to test the PV module coating at Masdar after analyzing the Abu Dhabi soil samples and field inspection. The decision was announced by Daniel Poneman, US Undersecretary of Energy, and Dr. Al Jaber in Masdar City. In April last year, the US Department of Energy and Masdar City planned to sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation, which opened the prelude to the cooperation between the two parties. The agreement between the two parties will jointly promote the development of clean and renewable energy and energy technologies.

“As the test site for the U.S. Department of Energy's assessment of new technologies, Masdar City has demonstrated its position as a global cooperation center for renewable energy and clean energy technology development,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar. The cooperation reflects the mission of the Masdar City project. We will cooperate with partners around the world in promoting clean energy use, personnel training and scientific research and development."
