Professor Wang Hong's research group at the School of Materials Science and Technology of Xi'an Jiaotong University has collaborated with researchers from Fudan University, Southern University of Science and Technology and Pennsylvania State University to develop a transparent self-powered ultrafast ultraviolet detector for high-performance communication systems. Related achievements were published in "Advanced Functional Materials" recently.
The ultraviolet photodetector is a sensor that can convert light in the ultraviolet band into an electrical signal, and plays an important role in the fields of national defense, military, modern industrial production and so on. In recent years, with the rise of transparent electronic technology, transparent ultraviolet detectors have gradually become a research hotspot. However, high transmittance and high detection performance, especially fast photoelectric response, are difficult to achieve, which limits the application of the device in dynamic sensing and ultraviolet communication.
The researchers designed and prepared a new type of self-powered ultraviolet photoelectric detection and communication device. The asymmetric Schottky junction constructed on both sides of the titanium dioxide film can effectively use the built-in electric field to achieve the rapid separation and collection of photo-generated carriers. The device detects the optical signal under zero bias. The photoelectric response speed of the device is as high as 44 nanoseconds, and has an average visible light transmittance of more than 70%. Based on the excellent photoelectric conversion capability of transparent devices, this study demonstrated for the first time a self-powered ultraviolet communication system, which realized the encrypted transmission of information in the UVC band.
