The EFSA's GMO team once again concluded that Austria did not provide new evidence to justify the ban on the two genetically modified corns. Since June 1999, Austria has banned Monsanto and Bayer's EU-approved MON810 and T25 GM corn from selling on the market for health protection reasons.
In May 2000, according to Article 16 of 90/220/EEC guidelines, Austria temporarily prohibited the import, processing and cultivation of these two types of genetically modified corn within its territory. Earlier this year, the European Commission asked EFSA to determine whether the Austrian submission contains new information that will affect the environmental risk assessment of GM maize.
The EFSA assessment included a widely disseminated and controversial study conducted by Jurgen Zuntek and colleagues at the University of Vienna. The scientists claimed that there was a link between transgenic maize (NK603 x Mon810) and experimental mice. EFSA pointed out that the process used in this study was not a method commonly used in food and feed safety assessments. The GMO team also found many deficiencies in the data reporting, methodology, and statistical calculations of the study, all of which made the results unconvincing. "EFSA believes that these data are insufficient to shake the GMO's conclusions regarding MON810 corn safety.
