Hydrogen sulfide hits record for superconducting critical temperature

The Institute of Chemistry of the Max Planck Institute in Germany recently issued a press release saying that its researchers found that hydrogen sulfide under high pressure will lose its ability to block currents at -70 degrees Celsius, and that the maximum temperature for superconducting critical temperatures will be refreshed. .

Superconductors will have a zero resistance at a certain low temperature. The temperature at which the superconductor resistance is zero is called the superconducting critical temperature. The previous record is that the superconducting critical temperature of copper oxide superconducting materials is the highest, and the superconducting critical temperature of a material under high pressure can reach minus 109 degrees Celsius.

However, German scientists reported in the new academic journal Nature that they found that under the pressure of 1.5 million bar (about 148 million standard atmospheric pressures), hydrogen sulfide could show super-high temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius. Conductivity. The 1.5 million bar high pressure is equivalent to half of the internal pressure in the core.

The researchers believe that hydrogen sulfide exhibits superconductivity mainly associated with hydrogen atoms at high pressures and temperatures, and it is speculated that the critical temperature of superconductivity may be higher for substances that carry more hydrogen atoms. At present, they have conducted experiments on pure hydrogen, but it is very difficult to create an environment with great pressure.

So far, the superconducting critical temperature of conventional superconductors such as hydrogen sulfide has been considered to be lower than minus 234 degrees Celsius. The copper oxides with higher critical superconducting temperatures belong to the special unconventional superconductors.

The researchers said that the superconducting experiment for hydrogen sulfide not only set a record for the superconducting critical temperature, but also for the first time verified the existence of a superconducting superconductor with a high critical temperature. They look forward to further research to find superconductors that can also have a zero resistance at room temperature. (Reporter Guo Yang)
