Semprius small three-junction solar cell conversion rate of 41%

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory recently confirmed that Semprius' triple junction cell has a conversion rate of more than 41% at a solar concentration of 1,000. It is said to be the highest efficiency at this concentration. The company in North Carolina laid gallium arsenide on prisms, allegedly concentrating sunlight 1100 times on batteries.

It is worth noting that the small size of the battery, only one-thousandth the size of the entire solar module, can reduce the cost of the component. In addition, Semprius admits that bringing together large batches of small batteries will make it easier for the battery substrate to dissipate heat, which will reduce the need for thermal management equipment.

Semprius said that a temporary coating was placed on the original gallium arsenide substrate, and then a multijunction solar cell substrate was placed on top of the coating. Once the wafer begins processing, the transfer coating process transfers the battery from the gallium arsenide substrate to the inserted silicon wafer. Semprius uses their micro-transfer coating process to transfer micro-batteries from the substrate to the silicon wafer. Large parallel processes can transfer thousands of cells at the same time, which allows the original substrate to be used repeatedly.

“We use a completely different approach,” said Kanchan Ghosal, Concentrating Photovoltaic Application Engineering Manager and Principal Researcher of the Photovoltaic Incubator Award at Senprius. This process uses microbatteries and transfer spray technology, which significantly reduces the use of highly concentrating photovoltaic module materials. And based on microelectronic processes and equipment, it provides a highly parallel method for manufacturing components."

Semprius told the National Renewable Energy Laboratory that low-cost processes can reduce production costs by 50%. A NREL data indicates that Siemens admitted to buying 16% of the company's shares.
