Advanced science and technology has become a new bright spot for cooperation between China and ASEAN

In the "Principal Reception of the Princess Zhu Lapeng" in Thailand, the staff received remote sensing images transmitted by China's "Environment 1A" satellite every day to provide more accurate weather information for the Thai meteorological department. In the Sino-Thai Joint Laboratory on Climate and Marine Ecosystems in Phuket, Thailand, researchers from China and Thailand jointly conduct research on oceans and climate. In addition to Thailand, other ASEAN countries have also entered the "satellite era" by leaps and bounds with the help of Chinese technology. Laos is a typical example. China Chengdu Linhai Electronics Co., Ltd. and Laos Post, Telecommunications and Information Department have established joint ventures to jointly carry out satellite design, manufacturing, carrying and launching activities. China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation is also cooperating with Laos to jointly develop satellite products to help launch a communications satellite before the 40th anniversary of the founding of Laos on December 2, 2015. In recent years, China and ASEAN have conducted a lot of exchanges and cooperation in the field of science and technology, and the scope of cooperation has been continuously expanded and the degree has been deepened. More and more Chinese companies are directly involved in science and technology projects in Southeast Asian countries, providing ASEAN countries with technical assistance within their capabilities and beginning to implement technology transfer to ASEAN countries. ASEAN countries have also accelerated their investment in China's technology industry. In May of this year, the Xinchuan Innovation and Technology Park, which was invested by the Temasek Holding Group and three other companies affiliated with the Singapore Ministry of Finance, officially started construction in Sichuan. The functions of the technology park cover training, service outsourcing, information technology, biomedicine and environmental protection. Eight major industries, such as digital new media, finance and fine instrument manufacturing , have created about 150,000 jobs. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on September 3 that more Singaporean companies will be established in Sichuan in the future. In addition, some companies in Thailand and Malaysia have also involved some high-tech projects when investing in China. Renewable energy will become an important direction China and ASEAN countries have also carried out close cooperation in agricultural technology. Guangxi and Yunnan sent a batch of agricultural technology experts to ASEAN countries to train and promote modern agricultural technologies such as rice, sugarcane planting technology and silkworm breeding technology. Some Chinese companies also provide technical guidance to cassava growers in ASEAN countries through free technical training. The ASEAN countries have benefited a lot from developing medical technology cooperation with China. The two sides jointly develop drugs and health products. Some ASEAN countries also sent students to study Chinese medicine in China. China organized Chinese medicine experts in batches to teach and treat in ASEAN countries. In July this year, the Chinese Ministry of Health sent a team of experts to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to provide opinions and technical advice on the treatment and prevention and control of serious infectious diseases of children in the country, and to provide technical assistance. The renewable energy sector will be one of the important directions for further scientific and technological cooperation between China and ASEAN. Most of the ASEAN countries are in tropical and subtropical regions. The annual sunshine time is long, and the development of solar photovoltaic industry is blessed with unique conditions. The China-ASEAN Expo emphasizes the issue of “scientific and technological cooperation”, indicating that both China and ASEAN are willing to make more use of renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions. The two sides also intend to carry out high-level, all-round and multi-level scientific and technological cooperation in food, energy and environmental protection. Li Liangfu, assistant director of the Institute of East Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, said in an interview with this reporter that scientific and technological cooperation has become a bright spot for cooperation between China and ASEAN. He believes that scientific and technological cooperation can help China and ASEAN promote their respective economic transformation and industrial upgrading.
