A new study by Japan's Agricultural and Food Industry Technology Research Institute has shown that the exchange of exchangeable potassium fertilizer in paddy fields contaminated with radioactive cesium can reduce the amount of radioactive cesium absorbed by brown rice by at least half.
Exchangeable potassium is a form of potassium that is directly absorbed by crops, but the amount of exchangeable potassium in the soil is quite limited.
Researchers at the Japan Agricultural and Food Industry Technology Research Institute recently conducted experiments on farms in the four counties of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma. The soils of these four counties were contaminated by radioactive materials leaked from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. They found that the radioactive cesium absorbed by farmland brown rice with exchangeable potassium fertilizer was reduced by at least half compared to brown rice harvested in farmland without the application of radioactive potassium fertilizer. The researchers believe that the chemical properties of strontium and potassium are similar, so potassium is replaced by strontium by rice.
However, the researchers found that the more the exchangeable potassium was applied, the better the effect. In the soil where the exchangeable potassium was originally very high, the exchange of potassium fertilizer could hardly be seen.
The chief researcher of the agency, Kato Naoto, believes: "This method is effective in soils with a low exchangeable potassium. If the brown rice is further processed into polished rice, the concentration of radioactive cesium will be further reduced. I hope that some regions in Japan will adopt this year when farming. This method."
In the future, the research team is also preparing to investigate annually whether the effects of this method will change and the effects on other crops.
