Hitachi Brings Reactors Burning Nuclear Waste to Universities in the United States

How to deal with nuclear waste is a big problem for humanity. In real life, the real problems brought about by nuclear waste are not "hot" substances, but rather those moderately radioactive substances with an atomic number greater than 92. Because of its high radioactivity, its half-life is relatively short-lived. That is to say, they burn very quickly - sometimes it is only minutes or even seconds. The half-life of mild radioactivity is as long as tens of thousands of years or even millions of years, which means that the storage of nuclear waste is a long-term problem that people need to face.

The next-generation reactor designed by Hitachi and its partners will be able to use the lower atomic number of transuranics as a fuel, and allow the high atomic number of elements to accelerate the burning rate, eliminating the need to spend a century.

It is understood that Hitachi decided to use the boiling water reactor as their design basis. They will develop a brand-new fuel element that will be able to use petroleum-refined nuclear waste and uranium as fuel and can be carried out in a standard boiling water reactor. If this goal is achieved, it will not only greatly reduce the construction cost of the reactor, but also can use decades of safety knowledge and operational experience to achieve efficient transuranic nuclear fission.

Hitachi said that as early as 2007, they had already begun the research and development of the reactor with their partners, and now their work has entered a completely new phase.
