Seco's new CX1 and CX2 monolithic diamond tip drills, which were independently developed by Chinese researchers, have recently been launched, extending tool life, increasing productivity and improving quality for composite hole processing manufacturers. Unlike traditional grain or double-sided PCD tip designs, the CX1 and CX2 solid carbide drills feature an integral PCD dome and integral PCD cap to further prevent material delamination and fiber uncutting. This new PCD technology also enables Seco to develop the industry's first PCD three-blade drill bit (CX1) for composite drilling.

According to reports, the CX1 and CX2 drills have the highest strength and sharpest cutting edge of Seco. This performance is achieved because the new drill uses an integral PCD tip that is sharper than a diamond-plated drill because the latter coating wraps the cutting edge of the drill, causing the blade to become dull. The new all-in-one PCD tip has other advantages, such as high cutting speed, low friction, good heat transfer and high process reliability, and can be reground many times.

For efficient drilling of "ordinary" composites, the CX1's third edge provides high stability for hole machining, reduces vibration and improves roundness. In addition, the CX1's dome-shaped tip provides a double-angled groove that greatly reduces material delamination and fiber uncutting in pure composite applications. Grinding such unusually complex grooves is not possible with conventional welding or similar PCD techniques. Moreover, the dome cap design allows the drill tip portion to be reground and can accept up to three regrinds.

The CX2 is a flat-groove drill tip for lamination composites with multiple layers of aluminum or titanium alloys. The PCD cap is used with this geometry because the 180° tip angle of the drill tip provides efficient chip breaking and chip evacuation. This design reduces the risk of metal chips damaging the borehole as the transition between the metal layer and the composite material. Therefore, CX2 can keep the surface roughness of the composite intact.

The CX1 and CX2 series are available in a variety of sizes to handle 3.26-9.53mm (0.125"-0.375") holes. Chamfering can also be incorporated. Drill design to further increase application flexibility.

Expanded Metal Mesh

Expanded metal is sometimes considered an alternative to sheet metal or wire mesh. It combines some of the best features of both-providing a material that is stronger than thin wire mesh and has better air flow and drainage than sheet metal.
