Semprius Names New Concentrator Photovoltaic Cell's Efficiency Close to 50%

Semprius, a producer of high-efficiency concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) products in North Carolina, said that it has recently developed a new tandem solar cell that promises conversion efficiency of close to 50%. According to the company, its latest stacked four-junction four-terminal solar cell enabled Semprius' micro-transfer process, which can achieve an efficiency of 43.9%. With high-speed micro-transfer enabled, three-junction microbatteries are stacked on a single junction microbattery, allowing thousands of stacked microbatteries to simultaneously produce very high yields.

Semprius said that due to the creation of a quadruple junction, the battery can tap light from a broader spectrum of solar energy and thus achieve higher efficiency than conventional silicon and thin film single junction solar cells. The company believes that the new battery provides a "short-term path" for concentrating photovoltaic solar cells to 50% efficiency.

Semprius attributes many improvements to a new interface material used between the top and bottom layers of the battery. This material minimizes light loss in the stack to optimize conversion efficiency. The four-terminal also means that the battery under normal conditions reduces spectral dependence and increases production.

The battery was developed by Semprius and the University of Illinois Frederick Sets Materials Research Laboratory at the University of California, Urbana-Champaign. It was led by Prof. John Rogers and a commercial partner, Solar Junction, who manufactured the III-V. High-efficiency solar cells. The latest project results will be published in the journal Natural Materials.

Scott Burroughs, vice president of technology at Semprius, said the activation of the process makes the battery fully compatible with the company's already in place production process, making it relatively easy to transfer the latest demonstration to the finished product. Semprius was a beneficiary of the Department of Energy's Sunshot incubator program.

Analytical firm IHS recently released a report saying that commercial concentrator photovoltaics will achieve 45% efficiency by 2017, and it is expected that Concentrating Photovoltaics will “invigorate” a competitive market.
